DESIGN A LAB EXPERIMENT
Instructions: This may be a good opportunity to practice for Science Fair in 3rd Term!
1. This is the ONLY assignment in the KIC science assignments that may be completed with a partner if you choose.
2. You will use the steps in the scientific method to investigate a problem related to what we have been studying in class. Example: first select an idea or problem to investigate, develop a procedure, test and gather results and make a conclusion about your idea or problem.
3. You may select ANY idea or problem as long as it is related to what we are studying, however you must have it approved by Ms.Young before you start. You may have your idea approved during recess, the start of lunch, after school, or by email/wiki message.
4. This experiment should not take more than a week to complete, and must be performed using recycled or household materials. No expensive materials/ special locations /special people are necessary to complete this assignment.
5. You will be required to write up the lab using this outline, and please make sure both partner's names are on the lab report. The lab worksheets on the wiki should be completely filled out and handed in for this assignment.

CASE STUDY: The goal of the case study assignment is to allow you to use your thinking and problem-solving skills to solve a problem or come up with solutions to the problems proposed below:

Instructions 7SCIENCE: Designing a human-like robot. Which systems do you think are the most important?

Problem: A Colombian research company, BodyCom, wants to hire you as one of their leading experts/scientists in human body research. They would like to develop technology to better assist people with failing organs in their body systems, but they are unsure of which body system may be the most important to begin making designs.
Your job is to convince the company through a written letter which system may be the most important for the human body and suggest some ways to create the new organs.

1. In your one-page letter, you must answer the following questions in complete sentences:
a) Which two body systems do you consider the most important for the survival/function of the human body? Explain why you have NOT chosen the other systems.
b) Of these, which do you think is the most important? Explain why.
c) For the important human body system you have chosen, identify at least 5 different organs/tissues/cells that are important for this system, and clearly explain their functions and how they work together.
d) Select one of these organs/tissues/cells and clearly describe how you could create a model to show the company. Include a labeled picture/diagram of this model organ.

You may use your textbook, notes or any other sources but you must include the information source at the bottom of the page when you hand it in.

Instructions 8SCIENCE: Climate warming environmental challenge: What are some solutions?

Problem: A Colombian research company, PlantCom, wants to hire you as one of their leading experts/scientists in plants and environmental research. They would like to develop some kind of plant technology to help with the climate warming issues around the planet. It is your task to propose an idea that would help to decrease the amount of warming.
Your job is to convince the company through a written letter that your technology is the most important to deal with these environmental problems.

1. In your one-page letter, you must answer the following questions in complete sentences:
a) Why do you think this climate warming is occurring at all? Explain how you know and why you think it is happening.
b) What role do plants have in the climate warming issue? For example, do they have a negative or positive effect on the climate? Explain.
c) For which specific problem related to climate warming are you going to propose a solution? For example, describe the specific technology you will create: Is it going to be related to transportation (cars, buses, airplanes, etc)? Manufacturing (factories)? Houses? Other problems?
d) How will plants be a part of your technology? Describe the role and importance of plants for your solution.
e) Draw a labeled diagram/picture to show the company how this technology would work.

You may use your textbook, notes or any other sources but you must include the information source at the bottom of the page when you hand it in.
